Can Entrepreneurship be Taught?
Friday, 12 March 2010 12:00
"Gregg Fairbrothers wasn't born to business. He grew up in an academic household. "I didn't know a debit from a credit," he admits. Fairbrothers studied earth sciences at Dartmouth in the '70s, got his master's at Rutgers, and eventually moved to Tulsa, where he joined Samson, a gas driller, and earned his chops at the right hand of the company's "hard-nosed founder." He picked up an MBA, but that was "just to get the toolkit," he says. 'I learned my business on the job.'"

"Today, as founding director of the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network, Fairbrothers teaches a wildly popular course on entrepreneurship at the Tuck School of Business. As befits the professor's background, Introduction to Entrepreneurship is all about learning through experience. Recently MBA candidates from all over the world filled the lecture hall and spilled into an adjoining room. There was a lecture on marketing, and then the real fun began, as students lined up to pitch their startup ideas."

Moving to Philadelphia? Check out Chattersource!
Friday, 12 March 2010 00:00

Chattersource was created as a fun, easy tool for students to share their local knowledge of Philly.  The website allows you to read reviews from current University of Pennsylvania students on housing, local vendors and discounts around Philadelphia.  Not only is Chattersource specifically designed for the Penn student community, but it will uniquely sort reviews and recommendations by your school, graduation year, club or team!  This interactive website was created two current second-year MBA students at Wharton!

It's spring break time!!
Thursday, 11 March 2010 00:00
Winter quarter ended this week – a very busy term for Tuckies in general, with a number of conferences, the winter carnival, the trip to Montreal, skiing, numerous visiting executive sessions, and of course, academics and the concomitant exams, projects, presentations, papers, assignments etc.

All that is history now, and students are off to far flung corners of the world to relax, rejuvenate, and explore different things in the next couple of weeks. The Center for International Business is organizing a couple of “Learning Expeditions” to Brazil and South Africa. The trips will give Tuckies an opportunity to interact with alumni in these two countries, meet with corporate and political leaders there, and get a first-hand experience of local cultures.

There’s another large contingent of Tuckies (65 students in all!) heading to Japan as part of a student-organized trek. A trek to Silicon Valley is also taking place and students will be visiting tech companies and venture capital firms during that trip. There is a one-week exchange program with IE Business School in Madrid that a few students are joining. Still smaller groups of students are traveling to Italy, UK, Australia, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, and other countries in the Far East.

With so much going on, the spring break will be as busy as was the winter quarter probably, but just the opportunity to get away from Hanover and explore the wide world is something that offers invaluable life lessons. Safe travels everyone – look forward to catching up and sharing experiences when we all get back in a couple of weeks. Enjoy!

NYC Media Trek
Friday, 12 March 2010 00:00
The Media club at LBS is hands down the best run club on campus. I know that's quite a contention but I do think it deserves the praise. I just returned from the first-ever LBS Media Trek to NYC. In...

MBA Conferences
Thursday, 11 March 2010 00:00
Before Tuck I was unaware of the large number of MBA conferences across the country. For every industry area--media, finance, consulting, marketing, retail, etc.--there are usually several well run conferences hosted at business schools. And these are invaluable opportunities to hear from industry leaders, meet fellow students, and network.

At Tuck the student heads of most clubs put on an event during the year. I know the Chairs of the Media & Entertainment club have been working for months planning our own event, which will occur April 1-2, 2010. I will post more about this once the website is "live."

But I want to highlight a conference in particular that I attended this past Friday: the MBA MEC (Media & Entertainment Conference) held down in New York City. This is a large event put on jointly by Columbia, NYU, Wharton, MIT, and Duke. The organizers did a great job this year, despite the blizzard that shut down most of the city. Highlights included talks from Philippe Dauman, CEO of Viacom, and Janet Robinson, CEO of The New York Times.

For prospective students, attending one of these conferences is a fantastic way to hear from business leaders in various industries, get a feel for the school that hosts the event, and meet students from a variety of schools.
